here’s a good mix you can stream and download (tracklist is there too). but it raises a question for me: how many genres can there be? admittedly, i am ignorant, and not all that knowledgeable about what makes a genre a genre. but occasionally, it all seems absurd. there’s this other mix on the same website (which i haven’t listened to yet, but seems promising), that calls out, by my count, seven separate genres, three of which i have never heard of. i’m all for fucking with music and making it awesome. but introducing something as a “Half an hour of jump-up Caribbean rave music – the UK sounds of garage, bassline, funky and jungle filtered through the tasty carnival vibes of bashment and soca” makes me think of math and not music.
maybe people that make music can relate and understand the distinctions better than someone (i.e. me) who just really likes music. but seriously, how many genres can there be before they become meaningless? answer in comments. educate me.
