World music need not be shit. Let’s get that out of the way pronto. And it’s got that image. Case in point: I overhear somebody in a cafe talking about how mind-expanding their latest world music purchase is. My reaction? The music is probably flavor-of-the-month fad, and the person talking about is at best underinformed and at worst… a douchebag. Sigh.
Again: World music need not be shit. Especially when it’s fire. Another case in another point: Zurita, an Argentinian DJ/producer/back-up dancer (maybe not that…) just dropped a new mixtape – the Great Cumbia Swindle. Yes, there’s cumbia, but there’s also a little booty bass, a little spanish dancehall, and a little bit of stuff we’re still working on identifying. It’s on some worldtown shit, and it’s singlehandedly keeping me from punching that dude in the cafe, because maybe, just maybe, he’s got Zurita on rotation.
