can’t say i’m especially feeling it, but i definitely did a double-take when i saw a track by stones throw-er cx kidtronix featuring mf doom alter-ego king geedorah. take me to your leader is one of my favorite albums. considering how crazy/crazy prolific doom is/can be (for example), i am happy this moniker has stood alone and hasn’t been drug out and adulterated. but seriously though, how good is that record? the production is out of this world! remind yourself by listening to “krazy world,” “fazers,” “next levels,” and “i wonder.” i can’t say i wouldn’t be hyped if there was a real follow-up though. in the meantime, i’ll wonder if a new madvillain album will ever see the light of day either.

LA beatmaker Tokimonsta got a little tipsy the other night and came home only to find her 300 lb Rhodes piano sitting in the middle of her living room.  Feeling inspired, she decided to jam out.  She then proceeded to pull out the ol’ Mac and recorded herself tapping on top of the piano, jingling her house keys and snapping her fingers.  The result is “Almost Free,”  a very mellow track for the late night, or perhaps for the morning after hangover.

Regardless of the the song’s title, the download is completly free.  Read more about Tokimonsta on her blog, and while you’re there check out the remix contest she’s got going on for this song.  It’ll be interesting to hear what the remixes sound like when she posts her favorites.

P.S.  You should buy Tokimonsta’s new EP, Cosmic Intoxication, which dropped today.

The name says it all. Via the recommendation of the guy WD4D, here’s the world’s shortest ep, clocking in at a grand total of a hair under five and a half minutes. The artist is Manchester, UK beat guy Mecca:83, and short though this release is, it’s definitely whet my appetite to hear more. Track two, aka “Cleft Foot”, is my new 1 minute 29 second jammy.

I honestly have been holding back on my emotions/opinions about Little Brother’s upcoming “last album” and the whole concept that 9th and Phonte are beefing right now and that one of my favorite hip-hop groups of all time is calling it quits.

Considering that this past weekend, Soundgarden just reunited here in Seattle after not playing a show together since 1997, a huge part of me knows that if all three of these hip-hop geniuses live long enough, they WILL do a reunion tour 8-10 years from now and try to collect bank. It’s a fact of the music industry…so I will call this a temporary separation. Between the love that Big Dho, the Justice League, Chaundon, and all of the LB affiliates have for one another, it’s impossible that we won’t be hearing anything less than 3-4 releases per year from these cats for the next few years. Not as Little Brother, but as a conglomerate.

STILL…CAN I GRIEVE? Goddamn. It’s just hitting me that LB is really trying to call it quits. What type of bullshit is that? I get that life moves forward at all times…but yo. Read the rest of this entry »

I either jumped the gun or its very serendipitous that Shake just posted this over at 2dopeboyz at about the same time I was hitting the publish button on the previous post.  Damn it 2db, you’re always staying one step ahead of me!

Anyway.  Y’all already know how I feel about the The Roots’ Dilla tribute, and I’m tired, so I’m gonna keep it short and sweet.  Remember Dice Raw from the good ol’ Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart days?  Yeah that’s him.  And he’s rapping over Dilla Joints.  It’s not the same as the first time they got together, but it’s good to hear Dice Raw rhyming with  The Roots again (sorta).

Dice, Dilla, Pregunta also features Charles P Bailey, Rick Friedrich, and Yameen Allworld.  Free download link and tracklist after the jump.

I know that this came out back in February, but the blogs were too busy with Dilla tributes around that time for this album to shine properly.  I also realize that a bunch of better-known music blogs reposted this album not too long ago, so if you already downloaded this or saw this elsewhere, my bad – give a brother a late pass.  But if you’re a Dilla or Roots fan (if you’re not a fan of both, close this window and don’t ever read my posts again) and you haven’t listened to this totally free and awesome tribute album yet, you need to do yourself a favor and download this now.

14 Dilla tribute tracks performed by the Roots.  I believe this is what they mean when they say ”unfuckwithable.”

The new Clutchy Hopkins album, The Storyteller, is out.  It sounds real nice.  You should buy it.  However, if you’re not quite convinced and you need to hear some more Clutchy jams before you decide to pull the trigger, you should refer to this previous post and/or join Clutchy’s website and he’ll hook you up with a free exclusive track.

This is Theophilus London over Dâm-Funk’s “Fantasy.”  He’s calling it “Accept the New.”  I like it, so I guess I accept.

This track will be on Theo’s upcoming mixtape, I Want You, which is set for release on April 28th.  While you’re waiting for that drop, you can download “Accept the New” here.

I happened upon these two shiny little gems titled Oscillations parts 1 & 2 yesterday afternoon.  Between the two free albums there are 41 tracks of dope-ass hip hop, dubstep, neosoul, and downtempo electronica from a few known, but mostly obscure, producers.  Brought to us by the quality music blogs Jus Like Music and Apple Juice Break, this project was put together with the simple purpose of putting out good music and introducing some relatively unknown artists to the world.

Really, these are the kinds of albums I can only hope to find.  You know, the kind that have enough familiar names in the tracklist to grab your attention, but then they introduce you to a bunch of new artists.  Each zip file even contains a little pdf booklet with a little biographic information on each of the artists, who hail from all over the freakin globe.  This album series has definitely opened up new doors to dopeness for me.  I hope y’all feel the same.

Stream both albums in their entirety and/or follow the links to download below.
