A recent mix by Detroit-based producer Fake Gold Chain is currently girding through my speakers and countless other speakers in Europe and parts unknown. Given how intrinsically Detroit electro this music is, chances are listeners around the globe will gravitate to it more than American audiophiles. Frankly that’s the way it’s always been.
Fake Gold Chain recently put out a mix called The Law of Club and Fang that delves into various parts of either Juan Atkins-style early techno, soul-driven Craig Huckaby type blacktronica and then veers into areas that are exclusively his own. For more on the project, go check out The Loop.

With the post, I’m also announcing the end of my semi regular Detroit Heat post here at LxNxM. The city is so all over the place with music that makes global listeners fawn… much of which we’ve posted without the Detroit Heat moniker that I’ve decided to give it some rest. You can be on the lookout for the full podcast/CD/DVD/straight to HBO mini movie in the near future. Until then, keep Detroit on your radar and listen to Fake Gold Chain.
It’s another installment of Sunday Sweatpants Jams, aka songs to listen to while you’re comfy on a chilly Sunday, climate change be damned. Get some cocoa, turn the lights down low, or whatever it is that puts you in your lane. Ah, Sundays. And sweatpants. Enjoy!
First up is “Yesterday”, a new one from London superduperfly producer Eric Lau. You probably wouldn’t expect Guilty Simpson to be your Sunday relaxation music, but on this jazzy number, it works. Plus, vocals from fellow Brit Fatima (aka Eglo Records‘ soul diva) and DC/UK singer Olivier Daysoul round it out to something vurry nice.

And speaking of Olivier Daysoul, a little over a year ago he put out a smooth little collaboration with Diamond Districteer Oddissee, entitled Mr. Saint Louis. It may not be brand new, but Daysoul’s voice and Odd’s melodic production are a winning combination. And like a fine wine, some things get better with maturity.
Nextly, here’s a little something from another member of the Eglo Records familia. This time, it’s ARP101, whose productions have been making me smile very regularly. He’s got that Funkineven energy with a little extra slip to it, making for some heavy records.

And last, but certainly not least, is Seattle’s own Keyboard Kid. One of Lil B’s main producers and a longtime advocate for all things #based, dude’s been pumping out instrumental goodies for a years now. For some reason we’ve never highlighted him on these august pages, so we’ll start to make things right with his October release The Mind Is So Complex When You’re Based. Beautiful.
Shoutout Chilly, Darwin, Rhythma and Derek Mazzone.
It seems like just yesterday that we were writing about a bushel of new releases from Bay Area/NYC squad Honor Roll – well, two months ago, actually – and already we’re back again with more.
Just before the new year, Honor Roll honcho Trackademicks dropped Cherry 2000 a four song, vibed out piece of beauty. Good snappy snares plus icey synths? It’s some serious wintertime music.
Listen to the whole thing in one mix below, and click here to download the full unmixed ep.
Okay, this feels right. Following up on the heelarious Chillin Island, Das Racist’s Dapwell and journalist/cultural soothsayer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd have combined forces to create Chittu Chattu, a podcast of insight, humor, wit, and, in this case, Seapunk – or rather, #seapunk. Just listen to the damn thing.

DJ, producer, and FileJerk, Astronomar has been a mainstay of the local scene here in Seattle for a minute. Now it’s time for the rest of the world to get familiar, thanks to Jeffree’s, Mad Decent’s newest underground-centric imprint. I am looking forward to this guy getting some shine, because he definitely deserves it. He’s an awesome dude and his music is the shit. LxNxM cosign %100.
Normally, we here at LxNxM wouldn’t waste time writing about a commercial artist like Pitbull. He already gets enough love on the radio via whatever payola scam his record label has worked out under the table. And frankly, as a recording artist, he’s wack. Mostly wack. But then he’ll turn around and refix Kanye and Jay-Z’s “Niggas in Paris,” quickly shoot a music video in Paris, and it’s hard not to give it some ink. Check the video below. And don’t worry… we still think Pitbull is wack. The new year hasn’t changed us that much. Plus once you make it past his portion of the song, the guy Sensato shows that he can really rap. Don’t miss his verse.
I’ve always had a ton of respect for Georgia Anne Muldrow over the years and her ability to make music independently, her way. It’s true that most people familiar with Muldrow’s work probably first heard her through her coveted Stones Throw Records material. The reality is, however, that she creates music as a free spirit, often with her sometimes man Dudley Perkins, and just lets Stones Throw distribute it so that her songs can reach a wider audience.
This past November Muldrow released a new album called Owed to Mama Rickie on her new label, Animated Cartunes, and this is the first video off the project. The album is worth buying (ahem) and it’s actually dedicated to her legendary mother, Rickie Byars Beckwith who you can read up on after you watch the video.
