i have to admit, most of the mixes that FACT post go over my head. i’m not super current on some of the micro genres (shit, even some of the established genres) that they feature, which means that on top of not liking some of them, i won’t even begin to appreciate them. this was fixing to be the case when i saw them writing about john talabot, who put together a mix for them last week. when i saw it linked on gorilla vs. bear, i was intrigued. when a friend of mine emailed asking if i had checked out talabot’s new record, ƒin, i wondered what i was missing.
a lot, as it turns out. it’s been awhile since i’ve been so taken with a record, but this one’s been on a repeat for a few days now. FACT says that “it’s hard to put a tag on john talabot’s music.” beyond the very appropriate deep, i’d go with cinematic. these are just big whooshing tracks. check out two of my favorite jams off ƒin below and then head over here to stream/download his FACT mix.

we were all super bummed when the great seattle ice storm of the third week of january 20 aught 12 hit and forced the cancellation of last month’s SOUNDSYSTEM. we wanted to start the year off right with a jumpin’ night of all the good music you’re used to from LxNxM. fortunately, the wait is almost over for the first SOUNDSYSTEM of 2012. so please come join us, THIS THURSDAY (2/16) at MOE BAR right about 10pm. we’ll have our usual guy Toast, special guest and kexp’s own dj chilly, and our very own wordlush getting in the mix as well. should be fun, so come on down.

check out some captivating visuals from tokimonsta. “darkest (dim)” is one of the standout tracks from last year’s ep creature dreams.
man, i saw this track come through twitter and spent the last 20 minutes trying to make it mine. guess i’m gonna have to keep waiting, but in the meanwhile, i’ll share it with you. it’s the b-side off krystal klear’s forthcoming we’re here single. the a-side was featured on his outstanding FACT mix from last year (or stream this terrible quality youtube why don’t you?). if you want to hear all 5 minutes and 32 seconds of this slow burning gem, head to pitchfork where it’s streaming on their goddamned unembeddable player.
so stoked to see stas and cat getting some national press/exposure (e.g. here, here, here, and here), especially on top of the fact that this jam is catchy as hell. their “debut” record, awE natualE comes out on sub pop on march 27. you can cop “QueenS” for the cost of your email address on the player above.
the Internet is a crazy place. a little over a month ago, someone by the name of evian christ uploaded a handful of tracks to youtube. i’m not sure how, but a number of well-respected music blogs and publications picked up on it (some of them right away) and nigh but one month later, dude is putting the tracks out proper and has even signed with well-respected label tri angle. you can preview the tracks over here (other standouts include this one and this one), and download the kings and them mixtape here.

pretty dope new oOoOO track (or, as i’m saying it in my head, new-oOoOO track) called “nowayback,” which makes me excited for his upcoming, terribly/emo-ly titled, ep our loving is hurting us, out in april.
shabazz palaces recently released this pretty transfixing video for standout (and my favorite) track “are you… can you.. were you? (felt)” from their super-lauded album black up.
