There are a handful of famous black jews out there that immediately come to mind when I think about the rare combination. Drake is, unfortunately, the first that pops into my head. Lord help us. Sammy Davis Jr, Lenny Kravitz, Whoopi Goldberg and Jesus immediately follow. All are probably influences on one level or another for a project that NY/Miami’s Lex One recently put out with his record label fam, Verbal Kush.

The two recorded an album called Black Jew together during a quick two week stint back in 2009 and then left it on the back burner to simmer until now. Many of the songs are just about being hungry, audacious, hellacious, and a little crazy which is something most black and Jews share in common anyway. The rapping is fresh and different than what people might expect. Definitely worth listening to as this isn’t meant to be a gimmick at all.

Fake Gold Chain recently put out a mix called The Law of Club and Fang that delves into various parts of either Juan Atkins-style early techno, soul-driven Craig Huckaby type blacktronica and then veers into areas that are exclusively his own. For more on the project, go check out The Loop.

With the post, I’m also announcing the end of my semi regular Detroit Heat post here at LxNxM. The city is so all over the place with music that makes global listeners fawn… much of which we’ve posted without the Detroit Heat moniker that I’ve decided to give it some rest. I’ve always had a ton of respect for Georgia Anne Muldrow over the years and her ability to make music independently, her way. It’s true that most people familiar with Muldrow’s work probably first heard her through her coveted Stones Throw Records material. The reality is, however, that she creates music as a free spirit, often with her sometimes man Dudley Perkins, and just lets Stones Throw distribute it so that her songs can reach a wider audience.

This past November Muldrow released a new album called Owed to Mama Rickie on her new label, Animated Cartunes, and this is the first video off the project. The album is worth buying (ahem) and it’s actually dedicated to her legendary mother, Rickie Byars Beckwith who you can read up on after you watch the video.

As a sort of anchor to keep people interested in that project, fellow producer DJ Spinna revisited MdCL’s catalog and plucked out some of the finest jams he could find. They naturally played their latest hit, “Bedroom Eyes,” which I learned earlier this week is currently the number one rock song on college radio nationwide. Not bad. We don’t feature nearly enough rock on this blog but this ditty is worth it, even if it came out a little while back. Big shoutouts to Sub Pop Records for flatout having the best label roster in the country right now.

Los Angeles duo J*DaVeY’s latest project, New Designer Drug, is the best album of the last half of 2011. I’ll make that statement and stand behind it without question. Everything about the record oozes a certain level of nu-wave creativity, black electronic power rock, future soul and all around passion that it’s hard to not get into the album. They released on their own label last week — this is after they walked away from an ill-fitting relationship at Warner Bros. Records — and are allowing the general public to the stream New Designer Drug for free or purchase it for $2.99. Charging three dollars for an amazing album nearly guarantees that a quarter of the people who hear it will purchase it. That’s smart. And the music is worth a heck of a lot more. This one is for all of the girls out there with a Rihanna/Tyra Banks forehead. Petite skulls were so last century everybody. If you didn’t already know, guys are now into girls with big ass heads apparently. Maybe not all guys feel that way, but DJ BlesOne and the folks in Don’t Talk to the Cops dig it.

The song actually reminds me of Detroit booty music from the 90s. The lyrics “big ass head” could easily be subbed out for “gel and weave” or anything from DJ Assault or DJ Godfather. I can’t hide how in love with this song I am right now. There are times for clowning around with your friends making music, and there are times for seriously attempting to create social change. What if you marry the two? That’s what three brave young Pakistanis have done with this viral video that directly challenges Islamic fundamentalism and corruption within their government. They probably are risking death for this, and that seriousness mixed with the cheeky lyrics make “Aalu Andu” my favorite song right now. Plus it’s catchy. They recently put out a video for their groovy lil ditty, “Love and Friendship,” that couldn’t be better titled. It was produced by the mercurial Detroiter Tall Black Guy and solidifies why more folks need to pay attention to all three of these artists as music makers.

The video is just promo for their Happy 2 Year: Deluxe Edition EP that they released yesterday as an updated wedding anniversary to themselves. Check that badboy out below and get hip if you’re not already.

Police officials take note: never kill a friend of Panamanian reggaetoneros Los Rakas. The duo does not take kindly to it, and given their growing popularity, there’s a chance they’ll make a mini-movie about your ass if you do and shoot you in the back of the head as the grand finale. So don’t even go there guero.
