Black history month? Black history light years! Here’s a project that just came out today from a clique out of Chicago called BBU. It’s a 17 track mixtape named after lauded poet and laureate bell hooks and somehow mashes up black history with internet blister hop. There’s comedy here, a cameo from Das Racist, production by the Hood Internet and a different side of rap than most people might expect.

This isn’t meant to sound like Southside Chicago hip-hop or be all R.B.G. Dead Prez rap either but it does exist on the fringes of both styles. Listen and glisten at your own leisure.

the Internet is a crazy place. a little over a month ago, someone by the name of evian christ uploaded a handful of tracks to youtube. i’m not sure how, but a number of well-respected music blogs and publications picked up on it (some of them right away) and nigh but one month later, dude is putting the tracks out proper and has even signed with well-respected label tri angle. you can preview the tracks over here (other standouts include this one and this one), and download the kings and them mixtape here.

DJ Chilly’s El Sonido is definitely one of the dopest shows on KEXP.  Every Monday from 6 to 9PM, Chilly selects the choicest tunes from all over Latin America and the rest of the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world, spanning genres, generations and cultures like it’s no thing.  It’s a guaranteed three hour fiesta for your earholes.  So, when Chilly asked me and Toast to come on as guests and do a 30 minute live DJ set, we couldn’t refuse.

It’s our first live radio gig, so please excuse the roughness around the edges. We’re still proud of our little mix, though.  Hope you like it.  Shouts out to Chilly!

Zeta Barber a.k.a. Zachariah Tucker is a man of many talents; ranging from music production to clothing and digital design – and he can give you one of the cleanest fades around. However, Zeta stands out from the throngs of self-styled muli-entrepenuers of modern hip hop culture in some very important ways. For starters, Zach’s heart matches his artistic skill and hustle. Over the last 6+ years, he has initiated countless collaborations with artists stretching the Puget Sound - scouting diverse acts from the hood to the hills to feature on his “All-City Chop” mixtapes, all while promoting and supporting the hell out of damn near everybody in the 206 hip hop scene.

His newest project finds dj Zeta Barber & The Forces of Nature at new creative-collaborative high.  SoundBody represents a evolution grounded in the chop style - with a smooth osmosis of bounce, 90′s R&B nostalgia, and just the right amount of mystic blip-hop to keep it fresh. Tender Bounce is my jam! Laced with the airy vocals of True Brilliance (see indeed)- the result is another good musical look for Seattle, from a good dude.

I’m a sucker for Christmas reggae tunes. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine that comes to light every holiday season. I’m glad to see that our favorite Swedish soundsystem, Safari Sound, has no shame in the Christmas reggae game too.  Merry Christmas, y’all!

i always feel bad for music that comes out in december since most year-end lists have already come out/been prepared, and then it’s technically disqualified from next year’s year-end list. in case you hadn’t noticed, we’re not the type of dudes who do year-end lists. if we did, i’d make room for this one from austin’s SKrause. the purple slab mixtape features a lot of my favorite artists from this year and some new-to-me big tracks as well. stream it below, and check the tracklist after the jump. so hey, a new weeknd mixtape. upon first listen, i’m saying house of balloons > echoes of silence >  thursday. check out the lead track, “D.D.” see if you can figure out what the initials stand for.

the weeknd – “D.D.”

I just got back from a two week long European vacation yesterday, and the jet lag is real.  After pulling an all-nighter, I left Amsterdam at 11AM, flew for ten hours in a giant metal tube, and arrived in Seattle at noon (the same day).  How’s that for a mindfuck?

After unpacking, starting a load of laundry, and getting a steaming bowl of duck noodle soup from my favorite noodle shop, I fired up the Macbook and started clicking through my favorites to catch up on some blog action.  I didn’t make it too far, as I started to pass out about five minutes into it, but I did find this incredibly appropriately titled mix featured on Largeup.com’s Mixtape Mondays from last week.

Montreal’s finest, Ghislain Poirier, comes through with some serious heaters on this mix(tape), which features LxNxM favorites Bonjay, Emvee, Boogat, Spoek Mathambo, Dubbel Dutch, and mucho mas.  I’m not sure how this worked out or what the connection is, but  the mix was made for Aritizia, a boutique specializing in women’s clothing.  Check em out, I guess.

I’d write more about how awesome this mix is, but my brain is still a little melty from traveling through space and time. I think I’m just gonna let this one play on repeat until I start feeling normal again.

one of my favorite musical genres is what i like to refer to as headphone music. this is basically music that sounds best when listening with headphones. i think this applies to a lot of music, actually, but it definitely applies to music that is a bit more effective when it’s blasting in that claustrophobic space between your ears, all other sounds cut off. montreal producer (okay, what’s in the water up there, between lunice, jacques green, ango, etc.) CFCF has popularized a subgenre of headphone music called night bus. it’s pretty self-evident, context-wise–that soundtrack for bleary-eyed, late-night trips home on the bus. considering that, in seattle anyway, any bus trip after 5:00pm for the next few months will be a night bus, this just might be your perfect mixtape. tracklist after the jump.
