Shoutouts to DJ Smutlee for putting out a dancehall mixtape that’s actually worthy of blogging. It’s a been a minute.
The London club DJ, mixtape maker, & blend specialist does what he does best on this 61-minute mix, which features a bunch of new jams, a couple tried a true classics and smattering of original mashups. Smutlee has made quite a name for himself in the moombahton scene lately, but it’s good to see that he’s still as keen on the dancehall as ever. Hope y’all enjoy this one as much as I do. It’s on steady bump. Hit the jump for the massive tracklist.

late pass: this mix (aka swag memorial 2011) that lunice made for the FADER last week is pretty stinking great. stream/download below, and look after the jump for the tracklist.
There’s one downside to being an early adopter in today’s culture — you rarely get credit for it. In terms of being on top of global music (especially what’s coming out of Africa), there is hardly anyone that was relaying it back to the analog or digital masses better than Banning Eyre and his crew at Afropop Worldwide. Do they get any substantial credit for it… of course not.
Still, Afropop was smart enough during their early days to figure out how important multi-media was to their mission. They foraged across various continents searching for the world’s best music (long before Putumayo existed) and then broadcasted it via radio, the web, and even at concerts to raise awareness about the amazing global artists who were going largely ignored by American audiences. Eyre, who I’ve had the pleasure of eating Thai food with here in Seattle, is still keeping the Afropop torch burning brightly and readers of this blog post should spend some time on the Afropop sites, especially Hipdeep.
Now they’ve got a mixtape! It only makes sense. Check out some cool Malian blues, neo-cumbia, fresh Latin grooves, and jams from the global Diaspora.

Str8 West Coastin’ is a free backyard BBQ party put on by three Brooklyn DJs with roots deep in the West Coast. Tonight was supposed to be the second edition of their tribute to West Coast hip hop culture. But as I type these words, New York is getting dumped on by Hurricane Irene. Thus, shutting down MTA and causing most of New York’s nightlife to shut down with it. Which is a bummer, really, because if it wasn’t for the hurricane the good people of Brooklyn could be dancing their asses off to some of the best hip hop the West Coast has blessed the world with to date.
DJs Eleven, Dopeshoes (206 stand up!) and Still Life have done the right thing and postponed Str8 West Coastin’ to September 17th. This is good for Brooklyn. But what about the rest of us?
Well, fret no more, friends. Because thanks to these three generous DJs, who made this 68-minute, 50-track mixtape masterpiece, we can all light the grill, twist up the chronic, throw our Ws up and party in style now. That’s right! Through the magic of modern technology, you are free to throw your very own Str8 West Coastin’ party in the comfort of your own backyard this weekend, the next, or any damn day of the week.

There’s a bloody heatwave taking over most of the U.S. right now and staying outside for long periods of time without a cooling mechanism is rather difficult. Frankly, it’s too flippin’ hot. If you don’t want to crank the AC but still need something to hit you in the face like a cool ocean breeze, check out my man DJ 100Proof’s latest mix, Backyard BBQ Part 5. It’s an annual summertime mix that seems to show up right on time each year and consistently get better.
Of course, I’m always in the Bahamas (which is where I’m currently stationed) when he releases Backyard BBQ and 100Proof’s soothing gift for mixing new school jams with rare, old school classics is just the relief I need from the scorching temperature outside. On his latest version, he’s got everything from the Stylistics, Roy Ayers, and De La Soul blended with more contemporary joints from Madlib, Elzhi, Ta’raach, and the Physics. Considering that 100Proof is also a Frenchman by blood, it’s not surprising that he’s mixed some Onra in here as well which all helps to make Backyard BBQ 5 such a fun listen.
Download it now. You’ll be happy that you did. Check out the full tracklist after the jump.

Summer has finally arrived in Seattle, which, in case you didn’t already know, is cause to celebrate. Who better to provide the soundtrack to this celebration than Mick Boogie and DJ Jazzy Jeff, makers of last years finest summer-themed mixtape, Summertime?
Trust me, you need this for your boombox/ipod dock this summer. It’s a guaranteed good time at your BBQ, pool party or whatever. Download or stream Summertime 2 here.

i’ve been digging this FACT mag mix that ford & lopatin (fka GAMES) made. it’s on that disco-y, house-y, uptempo-y tip that closes with an extended version of carly simon’s stunner “why”. great at-work music. listen below, and find the tracklist after the jump.
