one of my favorite songs of the year just got a video. enjoy.

This one goes out to some special folks in Miami this weekend. A couple of mixes from MIA/JA’s infamous Black Chiney Sound. They’re not piping hot new, but damn if the selections don’t still kill. The Notting Hill Carnival live mix alone slays most mixes out. Turn ‘em up, open the windows and enjoy the weather.

As the title suggests, ”Terrorist Threats” is an angry song.  The indignant and at times violent lyrics over the smoothed out beat makes it an especially haunting track.  It makes me feel like I’m watching a slow motion fight montage in a movie about a Tea Party envisioned apocalypse where the Crips and Bloods combine forces and rise up from the urban slums to fight the military for ultimate supremacy and ultimately take over and kill all the politicians.  The movie stars Ab-Soul and Danny Brown.  Kinda cool, right?

Ab-Soul is an affiliate of the Black Hippy crew out of L.A., which also features Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock.  Dave Free, who also produced this earlier Black Hippy banger, is to thank for the filthy beat.  Jhene Aiko, another gifted Los Angelina, can be heard doing her thing on the intro hook.

Terrorist Threats

It seems like every blog post, article or blurb on Keyboard Kid 206 I find on the internet tells me that he is best known for his production work for Lil B.  This makes me realize that I’ve been missing out on an awesome local producer because of my avoidance of Lil B.  Nothing personal against the Based God – I really am feeling the positivity – but the random, nonsensical stream of consciousness flow just doesn’t do it for me.  This track right here, however, does it for me.  I guess what I’m trying to say is, I like Keyboard Kid 206′s music and I think you should too.  Listen here:

Keyboard Kid’s The Transition EP will be available at all fine digital outlets and on limited edition 12″ May 7th.

Man. I was needing a little something new, something that would push me out of my zone (never let me get in there, fyi). And what should come walking through the digital door, but a musical trip to Chicago, via the footwork stylings of DJ Rashad. Bam! Rashad’s part of the Teklife team that keeps pumping quality juke/footwork/bass tracks from the midwest to the world. Get in your zone and get trippy mane.

The latest in the Africa In Your Earbuds series – brought to you by the good people at okayafrica – is maybe my favorite yet. The just-under-20-minute mix is selected and mixed by London/Lagos DJ and producer Olugbenga, a new name to me, but one that I’m going to be following up on.

Three things about the mix that make me happy: 1) lots of D’Banj, 2) a Clams Casino appearance, and 3) redonculous Seun Kuti reworks. All in one place. BLAOW.

It’s real difficult to try to hate on the vocals and visuals from this one. Members Only stalwart Thaddeus David is releasing a brand new video for his song “Less is More” this morning and it’s one of the best cuts I’ve heard from him on the solo tip. It’s slowed down and a little jazzy/sensual with lyrics that go hard and that type of mashup, aided by ace visuals from the First Ladies Production crew make this video a Wednesday morning winner. Check it out.

Fantastic. Just fantastic. The third installment in the ongoing Popular Bass series – curated and envisioned by the maestro Emeka, aka the man behind Gold Coast Trading Company – is possibly the strongest yet. Clocking in at a cozy fifteen minutes, Vol.3 features Danish producer CHLLNGR selecting tunes and setting a spare and intent tone.

The Harmattan is a dry and dusty West African trade wind. It blows south from the Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea between the end of November and the middle of March. On its passage over the desert it picks up fine dust particles which color the sky and distort the sun.

Follow CHLLNGR as he narates the journey from dessert to city to sea.

Get it while the getting’s good!

It’s been a joy to watch Seattle’s Fly Moon Royalty blossom into a respected soul duo. They’ve gone from graciously doing in-studios on my meager radio show and gigging around town to playing large music festivals, signing a record deal, getting proper publicity and having their latest video debut on Okayplayer earlier today. Good on both of you Action and Adra. Glad to see you coming up.
