check out some captivating visuals from tokimonsta. “darkest (dim)” is one of the standout tracks from last year’s ep creature dreams.
Still undecided on the song, but this video is crazy. I never knew you could ghostride a whip with such style. Good one, Maya.
Shouts out to Juvenile.
shabazz palaces recently released this pretty transfixing video for standout (and my favorite) track “are you… can you.. were you? (felt)” from their super-lauded album black up.

If you are not into songs about weed and beer, than this one’s not for you. Everyone else, here’s a video for a catchy new song about weed and beer by young up-and-coming American rappers ScHoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky. I particularly enjoyed the vocals that were sampled for the hook, which apparently came from this Kid Cudi cover, and the repetitious use of the words “weed” and “brew.” I don’t, however, appreciate the glorification of drinking and driving. If you’re ballin so hard, can’t you at least afford a taxi, dummy?
I’ve always had a ton of respect for Georgia Anne Muldrow over the years and her ability to make music independently, her way. It’s true that most people familiar with Muldrow’s work probably first heard her through her coveted Stones Throw Records material. The reality is, however, that she creates music as a free spirit, often with her sometimes man Dudley Perkins, and just lets Stones Throw distribute it so that her songs can reach a wider audience.
This past November Muldrow released a new album called Owed to Mama Rickie on her new label, Animated Cartunes, and this is the first video off the project. The album is worth buying (ahem) and it’s actually dedicated to her legendary mother, Rickie Byars Beckwith who you can read up on after you watch the video.
Danny Brown will fuck you up. Here’s the second video from his Fool’s Gold debut, XXX. Download that shit for free if you haven’t already, dummy.
prepare to hear a lot about azealia banks in 2012. this video for the insanely-catchy “212″ dropped last month, and follows some random appearances since last summer–a verse on major lazer’s ep lazers never die (diplo always get there first, amirite?), a cover of an interpol track, some FADER love. this track really ups the hype because it seems almost ready-made for future internet stardom and is probably a big factor for her being named as the coolest/7th coolest person of the year. throw in a lunice-produced track and a dancing lunice in the “212″ video and, well, i’m sold. look out 2012 – azealia banks will be all over you.
Just a few days ago Dum Dum Girls, who are one of my favorite noise-pop/punk rock bands out right now, played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Anybody else noticed that late night television is getting a lot better music these days? At any rate, I’m glad to see the four ladies getting the shine they deserve for creating simple yet catchy three chord punk with enough melody to make it easy on the ears.
They naturally played their latest hit, “Bedroom Eyes,” which I learned earlier this week is currently the number one rock song on college radio nationwide. Not bad. We don’t feature nearly enough rock on this blog but this ditty is worth it, even if it came out a little while back. Big shoutouts to Sub Pop Records for flatout having the best label roster in the country right now.
