Archive for the ‘Canary Sing’ tag

It’s been awhile since many of us have heard fresh music from vacationing Canary Sing member Madeleine “Lionness” Clifford but now she’s back with a new single, a new-ish name and a new style that definitely suits her in a big way. Peep the new video for MADlines latest release, “I Need a Moment.” What you’ll take in is a jazzy, sultry, and beautifully shot piece of art that immediately shows maturity and growth.

After moving from Seattle to Oakland to get a Masters from Mills College, some of us in the 206 could only wonder what she’d sound like musically the longer that she stayed away. It’s now been two years and it’s clear that all of that schooling (worldly and academically) is paying dividends. The lyrics and production have a hand-in-glove feel and as long as Maddy keeps putting out music like this, people need to listen.

By now you know that Last Night’s Mixtape is a colossal fan of the dude WD4D. Hell, we even asked him to spin at our recent party. We love the dude because he’s a great DJ – but the cherry on top is that he’s a dirty producer as well, and today marks the official release for his all-remix ep, Post Hyphy Romanticrunk, that flips vocals from some of the Northwest’s buzz-burning female artists (Choklate, Canary Sing and Lisa Dank, to be exact) over Dub D’s hella hoard signature sound.

Female artists often get pigeon-holed into certain sounds and musical genres, and it’s refreshing to hear some quality talent riding on top of some sincerely outside-the-box sounds. Big ups to everyone involved, and hopefully this will be a sing of things to come.

Vitamin D: emerald city beatsmith and patron of fine opera

Hey Vita! happy belated b-day from the not so tall homies @ LxNxM ! Vitamin D humbly presides in the upper echelon of Seattle producers and hip hop culture in general. Smoothly riding the currents of the Seattle “waves of hip hop ( see Mudede’s timeline/wave theory of Seattle Hip Hop)“, Vita has expanded outside of the 206 with notable collabos with Abstract Rude, Gift of Gab, and various Rhymesayer heads.  On the local tip – Vita ever remains the accessible tall homey,  laying down clever verses all over the place and supplying enduring beats that seem to tailor fit local emcees and singers.

Alright, so the word on the Born day EP is that Vitamin D recorded all these tracks on his b-day! source- local emcee ispire of Canary Sing. Not surprisingly the EP knocks, but it also entertains in way that will put a gleam in the eye of any true hip hop head. Vita gets it in throughout the nine tracks – exploring topics from wack birthdays, the limitations of playahood in the age of social media, and identity politics of Seattle Hip Hop.   Download the  Born Day EP here for free and whip test immediately thereafter.

It’s official! Canary Sing, the homies from around the way, just dropped their first video, a black-and-white partner to their jawn Freak Show. It’s good shit – Ispire and Lioness smash on some horn-heavy goodness, and the Georgetown (South End!) environs add a nice touch. Good on them for dropping the heat, and if you see them around, pick up their new mixtape: Boss Ladies. We approve.

Also: see if you can catch the cameo by LxNxM boss fella Wordlush. It’s in thurr.

We like mixtapes up in this biz, and we like people who send them to us (hint hint: lastnightsmixtape@gmail.com). One such person is LxNxM affiliate/associate/G-Unit Hollis Wong-Weezy, aka Ispire of Canary Sing. Hollis put together a little something something of the music that’s getting her up and out in the morning, including an exclusive preview of the Canary Sing remix of Dead Prez’s Mind Sex.

The mix goes by the handle i can’t help it, and it’s good isht, running the gamut from some BK-One/Haiku d’Etat to Senegal repper/rapper Sister Fa. The full tracklist is below the jump, so start downlading that goodness, and peruse the full selection. Get that!
