Toast is the resident logistician for LxNxM and according to the stats y’all are showing us more love – I just want to say we appreciate each one of you. This creative endeavor has brought our crew closer, and our ideas have only start to take root…

Keeping the love going, I have been mesmerized by the next level soulstress Nneka. We mentioned Nneka a few months back vis-à-vis a collaborative mixtape she dropped with tastemaker J.Period titled The Madness (Onye-Ala).

Nneka has experienced a much deserved rise to global status since then. The Nigerian-German/Nigeria- raised singer has landed a song “Viva Africa” on LISTEN UP! the official FIFA 2010 World Cup soundtrack, she also just joined Nas and Damian Marley on the Distant Relatives tour – making me regret missing their Seattle stop even more.

There is something higher about Nneka’s music. An anthropologist by training, she resonates her human experience to the listener with poetic clarity – in my humble opinion she is definitely channeling something the world needs in her music. Check out Nneka’s official site to cop her first U.S. release, Concrete Jungle and learn more about this visionary artist.

As some of you LxNxM readers might already know, Nas and Damian Marley have been working on a highly anticipated album titled Distant Relatives. Not surprisingly, while working on the yet-to-be-released album, the two artists had some great conversations about life, music and history. The stories and ideas they exchanged eventually grew into a shared vision of a project much bigger than just an album: a documentary film and series of events set to examine the complex history and often under-appreciated relationship between reggae and hip-hop. Sounds like a great idea, right?

Thankfully for us the National Geographic Society thought it was a good idea too, and last night they hosted Nas and Damian Marley’s first event, a panel discussion, also titled Distant Relatives, at the Grosvenor Auditorium in Washington D.C. The event, sponsored by VTech, was moderated by Sway, of Wake up Show and MTV News fame, and included the likes of such living legends as Kool Herc, Rakim, Big Youth, and Kool DJ Red Alert (who just happens to follow our blog on twitter), among others.

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.906572&w=425&h=350&fv=channel%3Ddistantrelatives%26clip%3Dpla_ffe16575-40c4-4a11-8353-d11a1f710a9d%26autoPlay%3Dfalse%26mute%3Dfalse]

Big ups to National Geographic for putting on hip hop and reggae history and culture! And, of course, much respect and thanks to Damian and Nas for organizing this amazing event.
