Shoutouts to DJ Smutlee for putting out a dancehall mixtape that’s actually worthy of blogging. It’s a been a minute.

The London club DJ, mixtape maker, & blend specialist does what he does best on this 61-minute mix, which features a bunch of new jams, a couple tried a true classics and smattering of original mashups. Smutlee has made quite a name for himself in the moombahton scene lately, but it’s good to see that he’s still as keen on the dancehall as ever. Hope y’all enjoy this one as much as I do. This one goes out to all our good people in Seattle: the team here at Last Night’s Mixtape is excited to announce the first installment of Soundsystem, our new night at Moe Bar.

This Friday the 13th (auspicious, no?), we’re turning Moe Bar into a family affair. And by “family affair” I – naturally – mean “LNM massive,” with Tang and Toast on the decks, Praxis and Wordlush hosting and toasting, and Krieg kissing babies (elect the man already, eh?).

We’re looking forward to having a regular showcase of the very best of the music you get here on Last Night’s Mixtape, (along with a healthy dose of the stuff we love too much to let out into the wilds of the internet), as well as a platform to put on some of the homies from around the country and the world whose music and skills are giving today’s music its tick.

And because we love ya, the night is free – you just show up looking proper, ready to move yourself right, and we’ll provide the bass and inspiration. Not a bad deal.

Tang’s Top Ten Dancehall (and Reggae) Singles of 2010

Our very own Wordlush recently contributed a dancehall top ten list for LargeUp, one of my favorite (should be your favorite too) Caribbean culture and music blogs out there. It’s a great list, and I suggest that you check it out. I even got my two cents in there, as the homie consulted with me on some of his choices. But, don’t get it twisted, this list is all Wordlush’s doing. And, in fact, he’s been trying to get me to post my own top ten dancehall/reggae list here on LxNxM for several days now. So, I know that this is a few days into to 2011 already, but after much deliberation, here’s my top ten for 2010 (in no particular order). For a truly exhaustive run-down of dancehall music and culture in 2010, you should go over to Kiss my Teeth/Imagelala. Our homegirl Erin Hansen absolutely killed the year-end round up.

Vybz Kartel ft. Russian – “Straight Jeans and Fitted”

Any song that makes t-shirts and jeans sound fashionable is a good one in my book. It also makes me feel a lot better about the way I dress. What can I say? I’m lazy.

Vybz Kartel ft. Popcaan & Gaza Slim – “Clarks”

I can’t say that I’ve ever owned a pair of Clarks before, but I want to wear them all the time now. This song is way more effective than Nelly’s “Air Force Ones” as far as free marketing campaigns for big shoe companies go. Also, I hear they look great with straight jeans and fitted tees. Just saying.

Busy Signal – “Nightshift” & “One More Night”

This is a two-for-one deal. These two crossover lover’s rock tunes are quite possibly my favorite tracks on D.O.B., and the video was my favorite reggae video of the year. No outrageously unbelievable sex, motorcycle or gangsta party – just some good ol’ working-class romance, and it’s not super cheesy. Good one, Busy! Way to keep these hits classy like Lionel and Phil originally intended.

Gappy Ranks – “Put the Stereo On”

2010′s reggae rookie of the year came outta Londontown, and he came out swinging. This is the title track from his debut album, which is full of roots-centric visions of how the world looks and feels to a young Londoner of West Indian descent. This album has gotten a lot of much deserved love so far this year. I hope that Gappy keeps bringing us more heat, and I hope the people keep giving him his propers.

Gyptian – “Hold Yuh”

If you didn’t hear this song eight billion times in the last year, you’ve been living under a soundproof rock. This song got so big in 2010 that Gyptian almost reached Sean Paul-sized proportions. Remixers ran rampant with this riddim too, possibly making it the most remixed reggae song of 2010. If I hear this song one more time, though… I swear.

Beenie Man ft. Fambo – “I’m Okay”/”Drinking Rum and Red Bull”

This is another two-for-one, and, really, these two tracks can’t really be separated no matter how hard you try. They’re on the same riddim, and I’m pretty sure that every time I’ve heard these songs one was mixed into the other. Kinda like a cocktail (get it?). Honestly, though, I can’t stand that Red Bull stuff. The smell of it alone makes me want to gag. I can’t understand how people put that chemical death into their bodies. But as long as Beenie keeps coming up with catchy dancehall anthems like this, I guess it’s okay. Red Bull also sponsors some pretty cool music/sports/culture stuff, so I guess I can’t be too mad at them either.

Collie Buddz – “Come Down”

Everyone’s favorite Bermudian (the only one you know of, really) had a pretty low-key year. No monster ganja anthems in 2010, and I guess it’s not that novel to see a white guy sing reggae tunes anymore. That’s cool. Gimmicks are lame and they wear off anyway. Collie’s got real skill and passion for the music, so it’s only right that he lay off the pop charts for a minute. He still managed to push out head bobbing romantic tracks like this one.

Mr. Lexx – “Dem a Pree”

This track was all over the place for a hot minute in early 2010. It’s over Ward 21′s Costa Nostra riddim, and it’s a crazy track. I imagine that Lexx’s inner dialogue went a little like this right before he recorded this song: “Big gruff voice, meet little munchkin voice. Now, make a track together.” Good job. You crazy for this one, Lexx!!!

Sexy Bak Riddim (Produced by Christopher Birch)

No, this has nothing to do with Justin Timberlake. So chill out, man.

Christopher Birch (left), best known for his work with reggae megastar Shaggy and often regarded as one of the best producers in the dancehall game, just released this monster of a riddim. It’s synthy and hypnotic – a simple yet deadly combination. Although Busy and Vybz have already had their way with this tune, I have a feeling that more heavyweights are going to want to take their turn before the year’s end. Peep the sampler below. Subatomic Sound Presents Elephant Man “Vampires and Informers”

Here’s an early Halloween treat for you, courtesy of New York’s Subatomic Sound and Kingston, Jamaica’s People’s Records.

Iron Lyon – Inna Dancehall Stylee (Ol’ School vs. New School)

Brooklyn Selector Iron Lyon put together this hour-long mix of classic and contemporary dancehall jams about a month ago, but it seems to just now be making it’s rounds on the internets. I found it over at artist/director/designer Va$htie’s blog while Googling around for a recently-dropped mixtape to satiate my dancehall craving, which has been pretty strong as of late.

You see, a couple of weeks ago, just before a DJ set, I dropped and broke a portable hard drive that contained damn near my entire reggae collection. I was still able to play a short set from the few songs I had on my laptop’s hard drive, but it was not the set I had planned for that night. After taking it to a couple of data recovery places, it became apparent that my reggae (and all the other beautiful music I had amassed over the years onto that drive) was unrecoverable and gone forever. Hence, I’ve been missing my music. A lot.

Thankfully, Iron Lyon and I have similar taste in dancehall. It’s a small consolation, but it makes me feel a little better to at least hear someone else mix this music.

Leftside (a.k.a. Dr. Evil) and Max Glazer in Seattle this Thursday

Craig Parks, a.k.a. Leftside, a.k.a. Dr. Evil is coming through Seatown on his Left Coast Tour with The Federation Sound‘s own Max Glazer this Thursday night. The split personality Jamaican deejay and his Brooklyn-based selector, best known as Rihanna’s DJ, will be blessing the crowd at Aura with some of the nastiest dancehall riddims that Seattle has ever witnessed. I’ll be honest with y’all – I don’t usually fuck with Pioneer Square. But that doesn’t mean that I’m gonna sleep on this show. Bona fide dancehall artistes are, after all, a rare commodity in this part of the country. Plus, remember Wicked and Wild Thursdays at the now defunct War Room? Yup, this show is brought to you by the same dudes that used to bring the dancehall heat to Capitol Hill every week. Apparently, the homies Soul One and dem officially moved Wicked and Wild to Aura months ago, and it still goes down every Thursday. Shit, now that I know that Seattle’s only real dancehall night is still crackin and it’s in Pioneer Square, I might not be able to say “I don’t usually fuck with Pioneer Square” much longer.

This song’s not the newest Leftside track, but it’s a good one. I’ll give you the choice of listening to the PG or the XXX version, just in case there are children that understand patois around. It kinda reminds me of Akon and Snoop’s classic love song “I Wanna Love You“/”I Wanna Fuck You“, with the lyrics of the hook being so disparate and all – not in the actual music.

Cutty Ranks X Cam’ron and Vado – Limb by Tung (Cosmo Baker & Skratch Bastid’s Harlem Meets Jamaica Mix)

Skratch Bastid and The Rub’s Cosmo Baker were rehearsing for their Let’s Build performance the other day, and somewhere along the way Cosmo decided to start fuckin with the beat to the new Dipset joint, “Speakin’ in Tongues.” Skratch Bastid threw Cutty’s classic acapella over it and “instantly smoke filled the room and an airhorn sounded from the distance.” The rest is mashup history.

Stream and/or download this magical musical mishmash below, but be mindful of where you are when you hit play. You definitely don’t want to play this song too loud in the office, unless, of course, your boss is cool with ganja smoke and airhorns at the workplace.

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Global Warning! Podcast

Word on the streets (and by streets I really mean blogs) is that Jahdan Blakkamoore is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Babylon Nightmare. No release date has been announced yet, but while we anxiously await the return of our favorite genrebending, Guyanese-Brooklynite singjay we have the Global Warning! podcast/mixtape to hold us down.

This mix was put together by Digital Ancient for Lustre Kings, the record label behind Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, and now Jahdan, as a little preview of what’s to come on the LP. After only a couple of rotations, I’m ready to for some full-length tracks – especially the Eek-A-Mouse sampling, “Down in the Ghetto.”

I finally got around to reading that Shabba Ranks article in the latest Fader (probably because it’s free online now), and I gotta say it was a pretty good read. I mean, I knew Shabba was the man back in the day and that he was hella influential, but dang! This man is a living legend. The Fader and Eddie “Stats” Houghton have done Shabba justice. Real Patois.

Dancehall Mixtape Re-Up

It’s been a minute since I hit my people up with some dancehall mixtape love, so I figured it’s only right that I give you two for the price of one this time (technically it’s always free, but you get the point).

The first mix I got for y’all comes to us from mixtape master Chrissy Murderbot. Titled Turn-of-the-Century Ragga, this mix – his 45th weekly installment from his My Year of Mixtapes blog - is a hearty helping of some of the best dancehall that the ’90s and early ’00s had to offer. 60 minutes of classic riddims, no drops and seamless blends – there’s no good reason for you not to download this immediately. Prepare yourself for an hour chock-full of big, big tunes that sound just as bangin today as they did when they first dropped. Be warned, if you play this at an audible level you better be prepared for a dance party. It’s inevitable. For your second serving of dancehall deliciousness, I have for you a brand new mix from a champion sound system that I recently got introduced to over at Discobelle, Safari Sound, out of Malmo, Sweden. These fellas come correct with it on their latest mixtape, Bad People Deya! Move Move Move! Defintiely a cut above the rest of that other stuff I’ve been running into out there as of late, this mix features some high quality riddims and fresh hits from Aidonia, Busy Signal, Baby Cham, Mavado, and then some, plus some seriously heavy dubplate selections. Big ups to Safari Sound for blessing us with this one. I can’t front though - I had no idea that they were doing their dancehall thing like this in Sweden. The Heatwave – 25 Years of Dancehall

The fellas over at The Heatwave (one of our all time favorite dancehall blogs) recently played a little homage to the last 25 years of digital dancehall on their Rinse FM radio show, starting with King Jammy and Wayne Smith’s prototype “Sleng Teng” and moving forward at a rate of about one track per year.
