BBE, the label that brought you that great chicago underground disco compilation, just released the second volume of “rare and uncovered” disco and (mostly northern) soul tracks, put together by al kent, aka million dollar disco. it leads off with the smoooth aged in harmony track above (which you can download over at the great blog american athelete). check out the promo mix below, and head here to buy the comp.

typically i don’t like posting mixtapes that i can’t stream off this blog because it’s like you shouldn’t just take my word for it, listen to the damn thing! but this one you’re just gonna have to take my word for it. batcave reggae is a mixtape of disco reggae sounds put together by some dude called kebabiman, who seems to have a whole slew of mixtapes over on his tumblr page. tracklist after the jump. Although I didn’t get a chance to go down to Miami to attend any of the Winter Music Conference parties this year, my homie Pancho, aka DJ Manuvers, kept me updated via his Facebook. Gilles Peterson, ?uestlove and Aloe Blacc were among some of the artists that he saw that made me most jealous. It looked like a hella good time, and I wish I could have been of a part of it. Oh well, there’s always next year…
On that note, Manuvers hooked it up with this dope 80-minute Champion Sound mix. Not quite like being there, but it’s a hell of a consolation prize.
Just in case you don’t already know, Champion Sound is a Miami-based DJ collective that holds a weekly party every Wednesday at the Electric Pickle in Miami. If you’re a Miami resident, or you’re just stopping through on a Wednesday, you should definitely check out Champion Sound for one of the best weekly hip hop/soul/disco/funk nights in town – held down by DJs A-Train, Manuvers, Sire Esq., and Lumin, and featuring the occasional heavyweight guest DJ.
Check the four-part mix, presented in 20-minute sets from each of the Champion Sound DJs, below. Peep the Champion Sound blog for the tracklisting.
i’ve really been into the whole disco/modern soul/boogie sound as of late, and i’m glad that the wide world of the internet has been so eager to oblige my inclinations. i’m also glad that there’s been such a resurgence in this late 70s/early 80s sound (i wonder if there’s some correlation between economic periods–stagflation then, the Great Recession now) from djs and musicians and magazines and blogs. this post is mainly a means for me to give unto you, dear LxNxM readers, the varied and random jams and mixtapes that i’ve been rocking recently in this fair genre. first up is this absolute banger from london crew, bugz in the attic (crappy quality download here, or just buy it already, cheapskate):
way, way more after the jump
