You might recall me recently showing some love for Glasgow stalwart Hudson Mohawke and his freshly released Satin Panthers EP. But Hudson Mohawke isn’t the only dj/producer from Glasgow that deserves some shine. In fact, Rustie has been making quite a name for himself over the past couple years. But even though he’s been around for as long as his fellow countryman HudMo has, he is just now set to release his debut LP, Glass Swords, in early October via Warp.

“All Nite” is the first single from the upcoming album. Some might call it dubstep, but I think it goes way beyond what that two-dimensional word tends to encapsulate. Sure, it’s got the 140 bpm thing going for it, but whatever. It’s a full-bodied banger: melodic and bassy. Dubstep haters be damned. Stream the tune below.

If you like what you hear, you should probably check out Rustie’s live 45 minute mix from Boiler Room from a couple of weeks ago, which you can enjoy in video and/or streaming audio format (pretty cool). He kinda tore shit up.

When I saw this new video on UGSMAG, purveyors of new hiphop media for those seeking refuge from the swag and trap stylings of the day, I rushed to the record shop and copped the album Dialogue. After listening through and blabbing to the homies about how dope the whole album is, I was surprised to find out that the album actually came out in 2009. I’m more than a little embarrassed for managing to sleep on Thavius Beck, cause the album is more creative and cutting edge than most of the hip hop I’ve heard for a minute.

“Go” and the rest of Dialogue speak to my love for lyricism. Beck’s rapid fire delivery kinda reminds of me of Living Legends Eligh, however unlike many dense rhymers he shares space with his epic, degenerate beats in a sonic dialogue that shatters the standard verse/bar formula. If I had to go into battle against an army of soulless terminators – this is what I would bump before facing my fate. A Mush records signee and certified Ableton guru, Beck boasts collaborations ranging from Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, Saul Williams’, and 2MEX. I will be watching/hoping for some new face-mashing music from dude soon.

The Vampires & Informers mini-album is the first in a series that teams up dancehall’s biggest deejays with electronic and experimental producers from around the globe. Originally a top selling limited edition 7″ vinyl recorded with Sly & Robbie back at Kingston’s Black Scorpio studios, “Vampires & Informers” has been resurrected and refixed for your bloodsucking entertainment by producers Subatomic Sound System, Dubblestandart, Stereotyp, Ming (of Ming&FS), & Kush Arora.

Halloween novelty value aside, this is good stuff. Stream and/or download the excellent sampler mix below. If you like what you hear, you should purchase it here.

Take the horrid sub-category of rap/rock: for every “Walk This Way” resulting from a Run DMC/Aerosmith collaboration, you have hundreds of Linkin Park/Jay Z combos. It’s painful, dammit, and it takes two perfectly good things (although Linkin Park doesn’t get even that nod…) and makes something far, far worse. It’s like vegan soul food. Yes, yes it is.

On that note, when someone starts talking about putting emcees over dubstep tracks, that raises my bad taste threat level to orange. It could so easily go terribly, terribly wrong.

Luckily, Dutch group Zwart Licht seem to be doing it right. They’ve been collaborating since 2007, developing as dubstep has gone through its ascendancy, and while they have been more traditionally hip hop sounding, they’re making new forays into the crossover gray zone. Numbering two emcees and one dj/producer, the group actually brings the good parts of both genres to bear, giving you all the neck-breaking bass and synth action of dubstep and combining it with street-inflected rhymes.

It’s good times, and it piques my curiosity to see what comes next, and if this particular shark will be jumped.

Really, these are the kinds of albums I can only hope to find. You know, the kind that have enough familiar names in the tracklist to grab your attention, but then they introduce you to a bunch of new artists. Each zip file even contains a little pdf booklet with a little biographic information on each of the artists, who hail from all over the freakin globe. This album series has definitely opened up new doors to dopeness for me. I hope y’all feel the same.

Stream both albums in their entirety and/or follow the links to download below.

If experimentaldubglitchbreakhopstep is what you seek – or if it sounds compelling Grey area is the spot.

Here is the first ever Grey Area Podcast to give you taste of what you might hear. Kicking it off with resident blapster Dead Noise and a bunch of his original tracks, mixed with some of his favorite tunes of the day. Rounding things out, Ill Cosby (Car/Crash/Set) brings a fine selection of glitchy, wonky sounds from the future!

If you can make it out to Grey Area this Friday, Feb.12 – you can catch LxNxM’s very own Toast and Tang on the decks as special guests. Peace.
