Hawthorne Headhunters – Teleport from gregthedude on Vimeo.
Damn. Makes me want to go hang out in desert, or at least the LA area, something wicked. Hawthorne Headhunters make music for sunglasses and warm breezes. Get here, summer!
Over the last few months, I’ve been more than happy to spill some digital ink on/over/somewhat nearby the Los Angeles soul hop collective the Hawthorne Headhunters. And now I get to do it some more! Black Spade, one third of those Hawthorne gents, just dropped the Build and Destroy Mixtape – mixed by DJ Track Star – which is a heavy little addition to the ongoing HH-affiliated discography.
What’s most interesting about solo projects from members of a cohesive group is how individuals’ personal tastes show themselves. For one, you see immediately how the whole is affected by the parts – everyone brings something very different to the table, and you only know what it is after you have a control group to test against. Build and Destroy is no exception: after only a handful of songs you have a sense that Black Spade brings a hard space-edged shake to the Headhunters’ music, which complements the souled out groove of the other members.
Highlights: the heavy flip/reimagining of Dilla’s To Fall in Love, which definitely messes with your head in some good ways.
Blaow! Tracklist after the jump.
Two of LxNxM’s favorite artists/subjects, funk demigod Dam Funk and grown and sexy collective Hawthorne Headhunters, teamed up last summer to grant us some musical beauty. The song is called PCH, and the vibe is exactly what you would hope for – synths that get chunky just before the smooth hits, and snares that make your neck do that snapping thing.
Anyhoo, it’s not brand new new, but it’s still filthy. Get ‘er.
Dam Funk x Hawthorne Headhunters – PCH
In-studio video below the jump. Damn.
Some music is just plain dirty. And the music made by Los Angelinos the Hawthorne Headhunters fits squarely, heavily, filthily under that category. I could talk about the whole crew all day, but I want to get into some more specifics around one member of the crew, Proh Mic. Proh’s an old Seattle head who migrated down the coast some years ago. I came across Hawthorne Headhunters before I knew he was involved, and when I found that out, well damn, that just about made my day. Apparently the sun’s treating dude right, because he has blossomed into something beastly in the music department.
In addition to his HH production, Proh Mic’s dropping free monthly mixtapes off his myspace, Volume 5 of which has been on repeat all day. You should download that right now, and I’ve thrown up the link for the Hawthorne Headhunters’ podcast for the HVW8 crew. Get that ish now, it’s for real.
