Archive for the ‘jams’ tag
so stoked to see stas and cat getting some national press/exposure (e.g. here, here, here, and here), especially on top of the fact that this jam is catchy as hell. their “debut” record, awE natualE comes out on sub pop on march 27. you can cop “QueenS” for the cost of your email address on the player above.

pretty dope new oOoOO track (or, as i’m saying it in my head, new-oOoOO track) called “nowayback,” which makes me excited for his upcoming, terribly/emo-ly titled, ep our loving is hurting us, out in april.

LA producer/musician kingdom has a new ep, dreama, dropping this monday (11/21) courtesy of london-based quality music purveyors night slugs. night slugs has a preview up on their soundcloud, but i’d like to draw your attention to the ep’s first track, “let you no,” which kingdom has on his soundcloud. this song is hitting the sweet spot in the venn diagram of music i’ve been feeling the past few months. check it out below:
Following Tang’s lead, here is a sweet little downloadable ditty from that guy Theophilus London. I really dig this RAC (remix artist collective) version over the album version – the bright, poppy keys, and the airy vocals of Sara Q (of Tegan and Sara fame) make this jam remind me of some of that early Paula Abdul – you know like those video-duets with the totally slept on MC Skat Kat.
Enjoy!
Theophilus London – Why Even Try (RAC Remix) by TheophilusLondon
When I saw this new video on UGSMAG, purveyors of new hiphop media for those seeking refuge from the swag and trap stylings of the day, I rushed to the record shop and copped the album Dialogue. After listening through and blabbing to the homies about how dope the whole album is, I was surprised to find out that the album actually came out in 2009. I’m more than a little embarrassed for managing to sleep on Thavius Beck, cause the album is more creative and cutting edge than most of the hip hop I’ve heard for a minute.
“Go” and the rest of Dialogue speak to my love for lyricism. Beck’s rapid fire delivery kinda reminds of me of Living Legends Eligh, however unlike many dense rhymers he shares space with his epic, degenerate beats in a sonic dialogue that shatters the standard verse/bar formula. If I had to go into battle against an army of soulless terminators – this is what I would bump before facing my fate. A Mush records signee and certified Ableton guru, Beck boasts collaborations ranging from Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, Saul Williams’, and 2MEX. I will be watching/hoping for some new face-mashing music from dude soon.
late pass: stereogum premiered the video for recently-featured jamie woon track “lady luck.” it’s good, and the song is still a stand-out. what is more interesting to me is this hudson mohawke’s “schmink wolf re-fix” of the track, which goes hard. enjoy:
in the spirit of tang’s cameo video post, i thought i’d share probably the craziest disco/boogie video you’ll ever see. i feel kind of bad about it because the song is actually really great, but while you’re watching the video, it’s hard to take the song seriously. regardless, the video has everything you want: fog swimming, fog diving, bad lip-syncing, shimmying, crazy eyes, three-way hugs, hug-jumping into the fog water, hug-jumping out of the fog water, and a funky bass breakdown at 2:15. you can grab a high-quality mp3 of “inside out” here.
Today I found myself thinking about my 18 year old sister and her unrepentant love for all things Gaga. Lil sis’ was definitely ahead of the masses in her prophesy of Gaga’s stardom, bumping L.G. along with her cohort of various eastern European homies and homettes in High School. Anyhow – I have become an admirer of sorts of Gaga’s creative gravitas – wondering how her voice might be flipped over more avant-garde beatage.
I took to the interwebs and came across this offbeat gem – a remix of “Paparazzi” by James Tamborello (also known as Dntel or James Figurine) the beatsmith behind indie heroes, the Postal Service. Download two teaser tracks of his new release “After Parties” (as Dntel) here. Shouts to my lil sis, and to Drew Tewksbury of the LA Weekly music blog for the good look.
I Dig the random Golden Retriever too – maybe that’s too much Seattle taking hold… ah well, enjoy.
one of my favorite current beatmakers/ producers, st louis’ phaseone has a new single out tuesday as part of lefse records’ way slow series. phaseone takes 90s rnb and, duh, slows it down: “chords are held for hypnotic lengths of time, bass is dropped slowly and with purpose, synths melt together and vocal samples bend and weave in and out of one another.” go here to buy the tape, stream a-side “being with you” below (download it at pitchfork), and go to mad decent to stream the b-side “right & wrong” (and then subscribe to MD’s rss feed on google reader for the download).
