Archive for the ‘LV’ tag

i’m a noted LV fan, so it’s no surprise that i’m posting their new video for “sebenze” (which means “work” in zulu), a track featuring previous collaborator okmalumkoolkat (this remix of that track is well-worth checking out as well). there are many things to like about this video: that beat, those jackets and hats and shades, johannesburg, that dude’s grill, the crazy donuts at the end, the FUCKTHERICH vanity plate.

i’m also psyched to hear that LV has an ep out in july, and an album coming in august that will also feature spoek mathambo.

i’ve been a fan of LV for awhile, and i’m glad to see them become more prolific. between their record with josh idehen, routes, and a recent mix of mostly new material for mary anne hobbs, they’ve put out a lot of material in the last six months or so. last night i came across a remix LV did for this still pretty-bassy track from mz bratt, who i’m assuming is english and that this track is a pop sensation over there. the single, along with LV’s remix (and two others), drops on october 30th.

hard to describe (though if i had to, i’d say electronic, soulful, dubstep, with an emphasis on dub), and even harder to google london outfit LV recently released their first full-length record, routes. they’ve technically released it with vocalist, poet, and i’m just going to go ahead and guess based on his twitter handle, benin citizen joshua idehen (though he sounds english as well). it’s really great, cohesive, and honestly i’m just glad to have something more than just two or three LV songs to listen to at once. stream one of my favorites from the album, “deleted scene,” below. you can also stream/download the promo mix for the record here, courtesy of FACT.

and because i’m feeling generous, i’m also going to share probably my favorite LV remix. it’s their “disco mix” of a dubstep track by pinch, featuring yolanda called “get up”. it’s really great. see for yourself:

february was a pretty great month for mixtapes, if you ask me. one of the highlights is this mix put together for the blog blackdown by gerv of london band LV. the mix is a collection of tracks that gerv collected while traveling across south africa. it’s by turn dark, heavy, dubby as hell, heavily syncopated, but with flashes of bright sounds that catch you totally off guard. be sure to read the interview with gerv and learn about how south african taxis function as soundsystems.
