the stones throw twitter feed has been kind to me today, so i figured i’d share with the rest of you too. yesterday, they shared the super great madlib remix of j dilla’s “the $”. stream and download that below. then, just 20 minutes ago, they tweetered out about a new/unreleased dam-funk track, “beautiful creep”. i clicked over, and even better than the track, i saw that dam-funk will be playing here in seattle at nectar lounge in fremont on december 10th. this event is put on by the homies at reign city and members only, tickets are only $12, and i’ll see you there.

J Dilla – The $ (Madlib Remix) by stonesthrow
Dam-Funk – Beautiful Creep (Unreleased) by stonesthrow

crazy prolific madlib is still putting out monthly mixtapes, and his most recent is one that i was hoping he’d put together. titled black soul, this installment focuses on “a dynamic point in the Black American musical experience – the mid to late 70s, when soul was giving way to disco, when the groove was on its way to the boogie, when funk was on it’s way to fonk.” the track above starts things off, and it only gets better from there. you can get black soul here.

here’s some dilla-related noise for wordlush (and this is way more serendipitous than you might think). the video above is a cover of a song that i (and you, most likely) primarily know as a sample in a j dilla track, by cibelle/cibelle’s alter-ego sonja khalecallon. i sorta wish it was the same length as the dilla cut, but the video is definitely not boring. thx to gvb for the heads-up.

y’all should also check out this jaylib vs j rocc mix:  ”J Rocc – who would later become the third member of Jaylib, on the turntables for each of the shows the guys did together – put together this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, as well as some of their sources, essentially telling the story of this group.”

on a semi-related note, i’m looking forward to this.

That’s right, people.  Madlib is putting out a monthly mixtape series, titled “Madlib Medicine Show,” starting January 2010.  From the looks of it, it’s gonna be a good show.

Madlib is launching the Madlib Medicine Show, a once-a-month, twelve-CD, six-LP series. The Madlib Medicine Show will be a combination of Madlib’s new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta’s 4-ton* stack of vinyl.

Madlib Medicine Show No. 1 is Before The Verdict featuring Guilty Simpson, a 17-track album mixing remixes and new material, something of a prelude to Madlib & Guilty Simpson’s forthcoming OJ Simpson album.

No man is an island. Some men are a quintet.

It’s that time of the year when the coolness, the coldness, and the grayness starts peeking its head in the door. Summer’s been gone, but fall is just starting to decide it’s ready to be winter. And daylight savings? Don’t even get me started.

So what’s a kid to do? Turn up the sunny sounds one more notch in the hopes that you can drive the clouds away for just… one…. more… day? Maybe, maybe. But sometimes it’s worth it to embrace the clouds, if only to equalize your annual equilibrium. Sounds good enough.

To that end, please get yourself ahold of Yesterday’s New Quintet, the Madlib/Madlib’s alternate identities project that takes your favorite jazzy freshness to a calm, under-the-covers-on-sunday-morning zone. It’s not for every hour in the day, but when it’s needed, dang it’s needed. Right here we’ve got all the YNQ albums, including the initial EP, the Peanut Butter Wolf mix, Sound Directions, Angles Without Edges, and the Stevie tribute.

Get that. Bump that. Get coze.

Yesterday’s New Quintet – the whole enchilada.
