Str8 West Coastin’ is a free backyard BBQ party put on by three Brooklyn DJs with roots deep in the West Coast. Tonight was supposed to be the second edition of their tribute to West Coast hip hop culture. But as I type these words, New York is getting dumped on by Hurricane Irene. Thus, shutting down MTA and causing most of New York’s nightlife to shut down with it. Which is a bummer, really, because if it wasn’t for the hurricane the good people of Brooklyn could be dancing their asses off to some of the best hip hop the West Coast has blessed the world with to date.
DJs Eleven, Dopeshoes (206 stand up!) and Still Life have done the right thing and postponed Str8 West Coastin’ to September 17th. This is good for Brooklyn. But what about the rest of us?
Well, fret no more, friends. Because thanks to these three generous DJs, who made this 68-minute, 50-track mixtape masterpiece, we can all light the grill, twist up the chronic, throw our Ws up and party in style now. That’s right! Through the magic of modern technology, you are free to throw your very own Str8 West Coastin’ party in the comfort of your own backyard this weekend, the next, or any damn day of the week.

it’s the summer, and it’s way easier to be outside than in here blogging. so here’s a bunch of stuff i’ve been digging the past few weeks. first up, lunice dropped ep one hunned last week, and “juice,” the track above, is the standout for me. you can hit up youtube to listen to the ep on luckyme’s channel, but you should probably just buy it.
austin dj/producer dubbel dutch put out this slow club (i.e. slowed down “jersey club rnb remixes”) mix that’s pretty good.
another good mixtape is this one LA-band nite jewel made for a party they played. it’s some good off-kilter soul, etc. jams. you can find the tracklist over here.
i thought about posting balam acab’s new song “motion” simply because of the waveform, but now it’s because i keep listening to it and the rest of the album that it’s from. it’s called WANDER / WONDER and it’s a pretty perfect late-night soundtrack. if you like “motion,” you should also check it out this remix.
and finally, another mixtape and more good late-night music. this is a mix that d33j made for super-blog live for the funk. d33j is a musician/beatmaker from san francisco well worth checking out for his original music as well. you can preview/download his ep tide songs here.

prepare to see this everywhere today: internet-sensation the weeknd dropped an appropriately titled new mixtape earlier this evening. thursday includes previously leaked tracks “rolling stone” and “the birds part one.” coming off their first live show, which youtube indicates was pretty solid, thursday seems to be a continuation of that emo-ish, r&b-ish, definitely catchy sound. download it here and enjoy mixtape standout “the zone,” which features fellow canadian drake, below:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

krystal klear put together one of the better boogie-ish mixtapes i’ve heard in a while for FACT mag. a lot of choice selections from samson & deliliah and giorgio moroder to daft punk to newer-comers like krystal klear himself, LxNxM fave sebastiAn, tensnake, and tiger & woods. stream/download below and check the tracklist after the jump.

Summer has finally arrived in Seattle, which, in case you didn’t already know, is cause to celebrate. Who better to provide the soundtrack to this celebration than Mick Boogie and DJ Jazzy Jeff, makers of last years finest summer-themed mixtape, Summertime?
Trust me, you need this for your boombox/ipod dock this summer. It’s a guaranteed good time at your BBQ, pool party or whatever. Download or stream Summertime 2 here.

i’ve been digging this FACT mag mix that ford & lopatin (fka GAMES) made. it’s on that disco-y, house-y, uptempo-y tip that closes with an extended version of carly simon’s stunner “why”. great at-work music. listen below, and find the tracklist after the jump.

LxNxM faves bonjay dropped a new mixtape today – suburban gothic – for the blog the stool pigeon. featuring their mega-soulful cover of caribou’s “jamelia” (get it here already), suburban gothic runs the gamut of bonjay’s sounds and influences (according to the stool pigeon and mixcloud that is r&b, electronica, dubstep, indie, dancehall, and gothic). which means it’s pretty great. stream it below:

dâm-funk made an awesome mixtape (tracklist after the jump) for clothing company oki-ni and i try to always post awesome mixtapes made by dâm-funk, so here we are. take it away, dâm: “All songs were taken from the original wax pressings. This mix is what I simply listen 2 on any given day, while living life. It’s a pleasure to share these tracks with my new oki-ni friends. I own all of these records. No mp3s or computer files were used for this mix. No fake shit or fads; just the truth.”

blog-friend vinylrichie has really cornered the market on the modern soul and funk mixtape scene. i frequently go back to his head over heels and take a chance mixtapes (VR knows this as i’ve been bothering him for several weeks trying to get tracklists for them), and his slower tempo mix from earlier this year is pretty great as well. he recently released a new mixtape, let’s go all the way, that reaffirms the dude’s ear for great modern soul sounds and skills at mixing them all together. stream and download below:
