There are a handful of famous black jews out there that immediately come to mind when I think about the rare combination. Drake is, unfortunately, the first that pops into my head. Lord help us. Sammy Davis Jr, Lenny Kravitz, Whoopi Goldberg and Jesus immediately follow. All are probably influences on one level or another for a project that NY/Miami’s Lex One recently put out with his record label fam, Verbal Kush.

The two recorded an album called Black Jew together during a quick two week stint back in 2009 and then left it on the back burner to simmer until now. Many of the songs are just about being hungry, audacious, hellacious, and a little crazy which is something most black and Jews share in common anyway. The rapping is fresh and different than what people might expect. Definitely worth listening to as this isn’t meant to be a gimmick at all.

Check out a video above and then peep the full release below. This certainly isn’t the first project from Lex One that we’ve posted on the site as dude stays putting out albums. Pay attention to him if you’re not already, dummy.

Dear Tanlines:

You’re lucky that I’m in a good mood. It’s Friday and I’m keen to share good music with the LxNxM readers who keep coming to our site faithfully (thanks all 19 of you!). As I dig for new goodies, I notice you’ve just released a European only project entitled Volume On. Fellas: It’s almost 2011! Who in the hell makes European only releases anymore when music is so global now-a-days? Even if you release an album in Papua New Guinea, it sure as hell won’t stay in Papua New Guinea. It’s on the web, and then it’s worldwide. Faster than you can say Soundcloud.

But yeah, back to you Tanlines. Your new project, aimed at the riki-tiki Europhiles, actually isn’t bad at all. It’s solid like three day old shit. Dance-y tracks, xylophonic beats, and enough sonic exploration that it’s worth sharing w/ the masses. You were “clever” enough not to have an embed link on your Soundcloud page, but clearly, you want the world to hear it. And they should. Since I’m in a nice mood, I’ll give ya an assist. Even though you’re two New York (read: Williamsburg) art-rock hipsters who I probably wouldn’t want to meet in person.

Sincerely — Reality Mr. Wordlush

I’ve always had a sort of musical crush on my old school Detroit homie RiRi Garcia. She’s the type of person that’s probably one of the most talented musicians standing in the room but rarely let’s on to all of the skills she’s got tucked in her knapsack. She can sing, drum, act, DJ, produce tracks and is just one of those badass females who’s learned to tap into her true power and let her light shine.

These days, she’s living in New York and focusing a bit more on the Afro/Latino (Puerto Rican to be exact) part of her music heritage. To get a better feel for her original productions… which tie in everything from experimental house to channeling orishas on wax, I’d recommend hitting her MySpace where she’s making some incredible music under the name DJ Rimarkable. For a taste of how she DJs and the music she’s into, listen to the Soundcloud below. It’s full of good sounds to help keep bad energy at bay.

Old Money Massive, the Vancouver/NYC dudes we wrote about waaaaaay back when, recently put out the video for their single Mamaseh. The song is dope, and the video brings a corresponding level of awesome with it. Washed out colors, grainy, and with more of that old New Yawk than you can shake a stick at. Check the b-side below, and download that. Loving that Old Money!
