Archive for the ‘remix’ tag

i’ve been a fan of LV for awhile, and i’m glad to see them become more prolific. between their record with josh idehen, routes, and a recent mix of mostly new material for mary anne hobbs, they’ve put out a lot of material in the last six months or so. last night i came across a remix LV did for this still pretty-bassy track from mz bratt, who i’m assuming is english and that this track is a pop sensation over there. the single, along with LV’s remix (and two others), drops on october 30th.

unknown mortal orchestra is a portland-based, new zealand band that play some kind of psychedelic-tinged indie rock. frontman ruban nielson (who, from this video at least, looks like a cross between harry potter and our own praxis) recently put together a podcast for the folks over at modular. it’s fitting in with that whole noir&B sound, with a bunch of remixes of late-90′s stars aliyah, brandy, and monica. my jam, though, is the all-too-brief remix of neneh cherry’s “buffalo stance.” i liked it so much i ripped it out of the mix and am sharing it below. it’s a great summer jam. stream and download below, tracklist after the jump.

as far as mega-famous pop stars go, you have to give drake some credit. beyond starring in degrassi, the dude has collaborated with various under the radar stars including jamie xx, the weeknd, and now, SBTRKT. if you haven’t already listened/downloaded “wildfire,” the lead single from SBTRKT’s upcoming record, and featuring the vocal wonders of little dragon’s yukimi nagano (get it here), maybe this “remix” will do the trick. it’s the exact same track, but now features a verse from drake. listen and download. When I saw this new video on UGSMAG, purveyors of new hiphop media for those seeking refuge from the swag and trap stylings of the day, I rushed to the record shop and copped the album Dialogue. After listening through and blabbing to the homies about how dope the whole album is, I was surprised to find out that the album actually came out in 2009. I’m more than a little embarrassed for managing to sleep on Thavius Beck, cause the album is more creative and cutting edge than most of the hip hop I’ve heard for a minute.

“Go” and the rest of Dialogue speak to my love for lyricism. Beck’s rapid fire delivery kinda reminds of me of Living Legends Eligh, however unlike many dense rhymers he shares space with his epic, degenerate beats in a sonic dialogue that shatters the standard verse/bar formula. If I had to go into battle against an army of soulless terminators – this is what I would bump before facing my fate. A Mush records signee and certified Ableton guru, Beck boasts collaborations ranging from Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta, Saul Williams’, and 2MEX.  I will be  watching/hoping for some new face-mashing music from dude soon.

Remember those soft summer nights, that you would lie with your head delicate upon a fresh clean pillow, and the mild breeze would wash over you? Ah yes, those were the nights you slept best. And those were the nights when you went to sleep with a lullaby in your head.

What? No? That’s not what growing up was like? Well shit. I can’t get you a warm breeze, but what I can do is give you a lullaby. Or rather, Nguzunguzu can.

Everybody’s favorite “we will fuck with your muscial head” crew (is this why we love them so?) just dropped The Perfect Lullaby mixtape, a 23-track journey through original compositions, remixes, and similarly genre-pushing compatriots like DJ Nate.

It’s good, you’ll be a better person after listening to it, so just doooooo it.

Here is some interesting new sound courtesy of one Ben Bronfman, enviro-creative renaissiance man and beau to M.I.A.  Beyond having a hand in the the production of Kanye’s “Monster”, dude is doing big thangs like co-founding Global Thermostat, a revolutionary carbon capture firm that separates CO2 directly from the air, or more recently becoming a principal in Algae Systems LLC, a third-generation bio-fuel company that takes waste water from cities and (using CO2 captured by GT) generates Jet-Fuel and Diesel fuel. That’s what I call going hard in the paint kids.

Founder of Green Owl, an environmentally conscious record label & apparel brand – Bronfman recently released this single “Gold” from his new group Teachers.  Also check out his eerie stripped down & rocked out remix of “Monster”.

Shouts to Checktheweather.net, a national online community and web platform to support and amplify the voice of young people of color in the US fighting for environmental justice,  for the good look and the good work!

It appears we’ve forgotten something. Tecla, she of the future-retro chanteuse sound, Gordon Voidwell collaborating, and Das Racist tour partnering, put out an album a little while back entitled Strangers In Masks. It was a good ass album. I listened to it and dug it. And I could have sworn this respectable publication had written some kind words to that extent. We did not. We are dummies.

Luckily, we get a second chance – Tecla just dropped an all-remix version release: Strangers Revisited, with refixes from LxNxM favorites Old Money Massive, Dash Speaks, and Kassa Overall, among others. Clocking in at 15 tracks, and skittering stylewise between future club, future hop, and future bass. Lots o’ futures, apparently.

Good shit, get it! And just for good measure, you can grab Strangers In Masks below the jump. BECAUSE WE DO IT FOR THE KIDS IS WHY.

Last month, a good friend got married in her native Eritrea. Though I wasn’t along for the party, the folks who were couldn’t stop talking about it. In fact, one of their highlights was a performance by Wedi Tukul, an Eritrean musician who is best known for being one of the most visible supporters of the Eritrean War of Independence from Ethiopia, and is so popular that he is known as the Bob Marley of Eritrea (no frat).

So Wedi Tukul performs at this wedding, in a small village outside of Asmara, the capitol of Eritrea. And he tears. it. down. To the ground. Everyone at the party was going nuts for him. Not too bad.

And of course, this performance leaves an imprint, and upon their return, the whole crew made sure we, the non-partakers, saw and heard Wedi Tukul. And they were right, the dude is great. He owns his songs like nothing. Just check out this jam:

So yeah, great music. So what could make it better? It just so happened that the homie has a homie in the Bay who’s been remixing Eritrean music for a couple years now, and sent a remix of Zeray back my way. Now that is what we call an unforseen win.

Wedi Tukul – Zeray (Abraham remix)

Now, surely this story is reaching its climax, no? Well, sort of. It turns out the Bay Area remixster, aka the producer Abraham, did a full album refix of Jay Z’s “American Gangster” with all-Eritrean samples. And he wants you to have it. Titled “The Eritrean Gangster,” the album is exactly what you would hope for in such a concept-driven album. The lyrics, well we know them (hello all you roc boys out there), and Abraham’s production draws out the funk of his samples, and drops well-programmed drums over the top, leaving you with a happy final package.

Yes, this is a long post, and yes, there are many musics here for you. You’ll just have to enjoy it!

Some of you may be up on this mix already, but for the rest of you I feel obligated to put you on to this here hot ish.

By the tasteful selection and mature vibe of the mix, its hard to believe that Greene is just 21 yrs old. The mix has all of the nostalgic warmth and soulful sonic foundation of the house and garage you fell in love with- but weaves in the creative blippage and vocal experimentation of the new school.

Overall it feels like a smooth but high energy contrast to the epic and raunchy booty tech sound that seems to be carrying the banner for house at the moment. Look out for Greene’s upcoming album “The Look” in just a few days on Jan 5th, released on NYC label LuckyMe also home to  LxNxM faves Lunice & Hudson Mohawke. Download the mix, check out the teaser for “The Look” the below, tracklist for mix after the jump.
