Last month, a good friend got married in her native Eritrea. Though I wasn’t along for the party, the folks who were couldn’t stop talking about it. In fact, one of their highlights was a performance by Wedi Tukul, an Eritrean musician who is best known for being one of the most visible supporters of the Eritrean War of Independence from Ethiopia, and is so popular that he is known as the Bob Marley of Eritrea (no frat).
So Wedi Tukul performs at this wedding, in a small village outside of Asmara, the capitol of Eritrea. And he tears. it. down. To the ground. Everyone at the party was going nuts for him. Not too bad.
And of course, this performance leaves an imprint, and upon their return, the whole crew made sure we, the non-partakers, saw and heard Wedi Tukul. And they were right, the dude is great. He owns his songs like nothing. Just check out this jam:
So yeah, great music. So what could make it better? It just so happened that the homie has a homie in the Bay who’s been remixing Eritrean music for a couple years now, and sent a remix of Zeray back my way. Now that is what we call an unforseen win.

Wedi Tukul – Zeray (Abraham remix)
Now, surely this story is reaching its climax, no? Well, sort of. It turns out the Bay Area remixster, aka the producer Abraham, did a full album refix of Jay Z’s “American Gangster” with all-Eritrean samples. And he wants you to have it. Titled “The Eritrean Gangster,” the album is exactly what you would hope for in such a concept-driven album. The lyrics, well we know them (hello all you roc boys out there), and Abraham’s production draws out the funk of his samples, and drops well-programmed drums over the top, leaving you with a happy final package.

Yes, this is a long post, and yes, there are many musics here for you. You’ll just have to enjoy it!
Some of you may be up on this mix already, but for the rest of you I feel obligated to put you on to this here hot ish.
By the tasteful selection and mature vibe of the mix, its hard to believe that Greene is just 21 yrs old. The mix has all of the nostalgic warmth and soulful sonic foundation of the house and garage you fell in love with- but weaves in the creative blippage and vocal experimentation of the new school.
Overall it feels like a smooth but high energy contrast to the epic and raunchy booty tech sound that seems to be carrying the banner for house at the moment. Look out for Greene’s upcoming album “The Look” in just a few days on Jan 5th, released on NYC label LuckyMe also home to LxNxM faves Lunice & Hudson Mohawke. Download the mix, check out the teaser for “The Look” the below, tracklist for mix after the jump.

Speaking of remixes, here’s another dope remix album that’s been making its way around the webs. Masterfully blended by Wick-It The Instigator, these tracks might make you think that this is an actual Big Boi and The Black Keys studio album. But it’s not, which might make it even cooler – this is straight from the DJ’s imagination.

Today I found myself thinking about my 18 year old sister and her unrepentant love for all things Gaga. Lil sis’ was definitely ahead of the masses in her prophesy of Gaga’s stardom, bumping L.G. along with her cohort of various eastern European homies and homettes in High School. Anyhow – I have become an admirer of sorts of Gaga’s creative gravitas – wondering how her voice might be flipped over more avant-garde beatage.
I took to the interwebs and came across this offbeat gem – a remix of “Paparazzi” by James Tamborello (also known as Dntel or James Figurine) the beatsmith behind indie heroes, the Postal Service. Download two teaser tracks of his new release “After Parties” (as Dntel) here. Shouts to my lil sis, and to Drew Tewksbury of the LA Weekly music blog for the good look.
I Dig the random Golden Retriever too – maybe that’s too much Seattle taking hold… ah well, enjoy.
Everyone’s favorite Bay Area/Panamanian duo has been busy. Abrazame, Los Rakas’ take on the world-dominating Hold Yuh riddim, originally dropped on that Free Music 2010 giveaway we told you about a while back, and recently they’ve been busy revisiting it.
In addition to collaborating on a delicate remix with Brooklyn mix maestro Uproot Andy, they’ve also just released a video to accompany the original version. The video’s a departure from their “Soy Raka” street party vibe, and while I still want the Turf Feinz to drop in at any minute, I suppose it’s not a bad thing that they mix up their approaches every now and then. Some thing about variety being the spice of life? Who knows? And for the record, yes, this is exactly how I dance on the beach. Just thought everyone should know.
Check the Uproot Andy flip below (and Abrazame acapella, Mr. Producer), and the video after the jump.
Filthy. One of my favorite producers going is Los Angeles MPC wizard Exile. His album Radio is a certified classic in my book (yes, I have a book), and seeing him live with DJ Day was one of the more impressive shows I’ve been to. Having said all that, it’s delightful to find out that other folks feel the same way.
Pretty hot off the presses (as in yesterday), Exile, along with sonic purveyors Dirty Science, released an album of Radio remixes and unreleased cuts. And they are excellent. Amongst the remixers are LxNxM favorites Rhettmatic and Mr. Dibiase (me happy). Given the original album’s specificity (all samples came off L.A. radio) and the wide-ranging cast of characters involved with this project, the end result is something short of unified concept, and something beyond a simple collection.
The hits hit (Marco Polo goes hard!), though a couple of the remixes lose too much of the original without enough added value from the new artist involved. So it goes. This shit is heavy and you should get it. It’s free, dammit.

head on over to the one-armed, lazer-shooting, jamaican commando major lazer’s myspace page to stream the new lazers never die ep featuring everyone from M.I.A. to collie buddz and remixes from buraka som sistema and thom yorke. yes, the dude from radiohead remixed “jump up.” it’s been a minute since i listened to guns don’t kill people…LAZERS do, and this ep is reminding me why i should revisit it. before you go, check out this kenny meez remix of my still-favorite track on guns, “can’t stop now” with jovi rockwell and mr. lexx. download it over at the mad decent blog.
Renton producer 10.4 Rog has been tearing up the remix circuit for the last hot minute. Between a hot streak of local flips (Mash Hall, Clockwork, State of the Artist), Mr. 10.4 just dropped a deceptively low-key take on Erykah Badu’s “Honey”, the most straightly thick-sliced funk soul track off of New Amerykah Part One.
As Rog (Roger? 10? What should we call you duders?) is wont to do on his remixes, he pulls the guts straight out of the original, pulling a whole new vision of the song out of the ashes of the original. What was once a Friday afternoon track becomes a Sunday morning meditation. Hell, add it to that recent Tokimonsta track and you’ve got your hangover on the run.
Check the Erykah flip below, and grab the download for the State of the Artist flip. To get even more, check on the homie Andrew Matson’s 10.4 Rog posts over at Fairview Fannie, the Seattle Times.

Bambu – LA rep, former Native Gun and all around nice guy – recently dropped his latest album, Paper Cuts. Firstly: you should buy his album right now. Secondly, being the kind-hearted gent that he is, Bam also put out the accapellas from Paper Cuts for you to download, remix and enjoy. And you should.
Below are a couple of remixes that are already floating around, one from Digital Martyrs, and one from, well, me, dammit. Cop the album, download the accapellas, makes some remixes, send them to us and to Bambu, what the hey.

And check the video for Slow Down – with your boy Geo, produced by Everett stalwart MTK – after jump (and yes, we’ve already posted the video – but you people demand content, damn it!).
