The Medulla Transmissions is the soundtrack for your long overdue inner-space road trip. Your navigator is Renaissance man Jahon Mikal; a classically trained pianist, dancer, singer, producer, and reader of auras.
Throughout the decidedly future-funk, electro orchestra of Transmissions – Jahon Mikal’s other artistic confluences can be heard – from the fundamental hip hop mastery of his big bro/hip hop vet Vitamin D to his current work with the up-and-coming Seattle based Hip-Doo-Woppers The Heartfelts. The album also features vocal support from emcee/dance artist Maxie Jamal.
The complex beats and lyrical harmonies are so polished but maintain an organic vibe that is autonomic like the functions of the medulla, kinda like the art behind the simple act of breathing. Fresh.
Please show love and offer what you can, for this this pay- what-you can download album.

the stones throw twitter feed has been kind to me today, so i figured i’d share with the rest of you too. yesterday, they shared the super great madlib remix of j dilla’s “the $”. stream and download that below. then, just 20 minutes ago, they tweetered out about a new/unreleased dam-funk track, “beautiful creep”. i clicked over, and even better than the track, i saw that dam-funk will be playing here in seattle at nectar lounge in fremont on december 10th. this event is put on by the homies at reign city and members only, tickets are only $12, and i’ll see you there.

so after i posted that awesome matthew africa mix, one of the guys from sweater funk, vinylrichie, got in touch and that was nice. he’s got a pretty great blog (and pretty great mixtapes too). today he brought the movie wheedle’s groove to my attention as well. wheedle’s groove is about the 1970s funk and soul scene in seattle, and i’d encourage everyone to check the extended trailer above. (as an aside, i love that the first dude we meet in the trailer is a record collector from detroit.) and thanks to chorizo funk in the comments of vinylrichie’s post for letting me know that i can stream the whole film right here. for those snowed in here in seattle, kill some time with wheedle’s groove.
Here’s a new gem from West Coast fam Tha Bizness and one of their newest artists, Parker. Just when I think I’ve got a grasp on all of the hip-hop talent Seattle has to offer, I get pleasantly surprised by one of the better flows I’ve heard locally in awhile! I don’t know much about this cat but you can tell from the beats, rhymes, and creative visuals that he’s swinging for the fences and I’m excited to hear more in the future. #WhoisParker???
This Tuesday brings a special treat to our Seattle peoples. Onra, the Parisian beatsmaster with some of the deepest (digital) crates around, is swinging through town to bless your eardrums with some bass. I hear he soaked that shit in rose water already too. Or something.
As we’ve written in the past, Onra is music to either make babies or start fights to. If that sounds contradictory to you, then you need to take a listen to the many freely available releases out on these webs. Onra is a master of building tension within a moving song. His creations layer melody, rhythm and highly attuned absences of both, creating mini-dramas along each step of a single song’s development. The result is a sound that keeps necks solidly cracking even at the smoothest moments.
It’s going to be quite a night – the Stop Biting crew (including LxNxM family WD4D) are heavyweights unto themselves. The combo? Clearly an 800-lb gorilla that you should pay attention to. It all goes down at the Lo-Fi (429 Eastlake Ave E), be thurr.
Check out the track/video below, and due to poor Soundcloud choices, head over here to listen to a gang more.

Hey Seattle. One of the fastest rising global music stars is headed to town this upcoming Saturday night and performing at the Showbox Sodo. It’s not our favorite venue in town either (we here you) but damn if K’naan isn’t one of the few performers out there that makes hitting up Showbox Sodo totally worth it.
From everything I can gather, K’naan’s literally traveled around the world and back since the last time he performed in Seattle at the Moore Theater on ’09 with Matisyahu. You might have seen him at the World Cup performing like a megastar or on Jimmy Kimmel Live two nights ago. He’s a good representative for a world music star should be: he’s not just doing hip-hop or singing or rock or whatever but rather he’s found his own genre that resonates with music fans around the globe. Just like you always knew that he would.
Here’s the best news of the day regarding K’naan: we’ve got free tickets to give away to a couple of lucky readers here on the blog. Here’s what you need to do: drop a line in the comments or hit us up on Twitter saying that you’d like a pair of tickets (some way to get a hold of you is helpful) and we will pick the winners in the next 24 hours. Winners will be decided semi-randomly, but trying to win always helps! Okay Seattle? We’re about to hook you up with free tickets, so let us know you want some K’naan in your life!
Check out footage of K’naan on Jimmy Kimmel performing “Fatima” below the jump.

We talked about it enough beforehand, and the night itself was bananas, so why did it take us this long to get you some pictures of Das Racist, Mash Hall and Militant Child wrecking the house at the Comet last Friday? Who knows. The point is now here are some pictures for you, care of the homie Dave, and his compatriot Britney. More coming soon, plus video.
Craig Parks, a.k.a. Leftside, a.k.a. Dr. Evil is coming through Seatown on his Left Coast Tour with The Federation Sound‘s own Max Glazer this Thursday night. The split personality Jamaican deejay and his Brooklyn-based selector, best known as Rihanna’s DJ, will be blessing the crowd at Aura with some of the nastiest dancehall riddims that Seattle has ever witnessed. I’ll be honest with y’all – I don’t usually fuck with Pioneer Square. But that doesn’t mean that I’m gonna sleep on this show. Bona fide dancehall artistes are, after all, a rare commodity in this part of the country. Plus, remember Wicked and Wild Thursdays at the now defunct War Room? Yup, this show is brought to you by the same dudes that used to bring the dancehall heat to Capitol Hill every week. Apparently, the homies Soul One and dem officially moved Wicked and Wild to Aura months ago, and it still goes down every Thursday. Shit, now that I know that Seattle’s only real dancehall night is still crackin and it’s in Pioneer Square, I might not be able to say “I don’t usually fuck with Pioneer Square” much longer.
Peep some Leftside and Max Glazer tunes, visuals and links after the jump.
Not sure if you’ve recovered from the epic Das Racist x Mash Hall x Militant Child x Toast & Tang show on Friday, but regardless, coming down to Moe Bar tonight for The Red Eye should help. Resident Red Eye DJs the Filejerks (big shouts to Astronomar and Shorthand) will be playing only the choicest of cuts along with LxNxM’s own Toast and Tang (that’s me). If you read our blog and you like the tunes we put up on here, you’ll definitely appreciate the vibe at Red Eye tonight. Drink specials, good music, good people – Sunday nights don’t get much better than that. See you there. Bring a friend or eight.
