Full disclosure: the whole LxNxM crew spent last weekend getting our South Florida on. It was, of course, a return (to innocence?) for many of our team, seeing as the Seattle/Florida connection runs deep in these parts, but it was my first time soaking up the glory of Dania Beach, et al.
My only regret? Not having this mixtape from the good folks at Wax Poetics to soundtrack the weekend. It’s not often you get an hour long, perfectly tailored geographic soundtrack like Induce and DJ Tosh’s Miami Life mix. The whole point is to do a deep sample of the evolving Miami sound, from funk to booty bass. Too much good.
Salute to the whole South Florida team, and turn this one up f0r all your midnight barbeques.
Tracklisting after the jump.

The two musicians seem as if they are musical cousins. At least to my ears, it seems quite natural that Dam Funk would be the most qualified funkateer around to offer up a dignified mix of Prince’s music. Of course none of this would happen under regular circumstances so leave it up to the good people behind Wax Poetics Magazine to make it happen.
Enjoy the vibes from both artists and check out the full track list below.
This whole Detroit Heat column got started roughly a year ago when I realized how crucial it is to highlight music from my hometown that more of the world needs to experience. One of the first group’s to get the Detroit Heat treatment was Stoopz N’ Breeze, a comedic tandem of producer Bob Stoopz (Hugh Whitaker) and rapper Drew Breeze (Leaf Erikson). Their last project, Turn Up The Smooth, was a concept album linking the underworld cultures of Miami and Detroit, something I explained more in depth during Detroit Heat Part 2. As of last week, these cats shot finally got around to releasing a proper video and it’s some of the most lo-fi, low class, crass, piece of comedic coonery you’ll ever see. All of that I mean in a good way.
Check out the vid for “DADE COUNTY CRUIZIN’” above and head over to Wax Poetics if you want to purchase the album. Be on the lookout for Detroit Heat the Compilation from yours truly as a digital stocking stuffer later this month.
